A Vision for Change

About Naomi Miguel

Skeg T:ash, my name is Naomi Miguel and I'm running for Arizona State Legislature - District 23. Here's a little about me: I was born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

I graduated from Casa Grande Union High School - shoutout, Cougars! Name a club, and I was most likely in it. I was a cheerleader and played saxophone in the marching band.

I graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University, an all-women’s college, with a degree in political science and minors in art and pre-law. Go Athenas!

Then I worked for a national nonprofit focused on tribal justice systems and played in an acoustic band for 2 months. During this time, I realized I needed to return to school to contribute more to our community.

I graduated from American University’s Master's in Public Administration and Policy program, where I began to realize that I naturally wanted to learn how to fix policy problems through legislation.

Curious about my legislative research, I participated in the Udall Foundation’s Native American Internship program, where I learned - I love legislation.

Following the internship program, I was hired to work for former Representative Raúl Grijalva’s office, where I learned how to make le hefe’s coffee and introduce bills.

When he became Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, I became the Staff Director for the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States, which passed historic legislation for tribal nations and was essential to passing bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Biden Administration, I served as the Executive Director of the White House Initiative for Native Americans and Tribal Colleges and Universities, where I led tribal education policy efforts. We focused on education sovereignty, Indigenous languages, and teacher retention.

Since then, I have started my own consulting business and taken time off to spend more time with my family.

However, I see the disparities living in a rural tribal area, and I think our State can do more, which is why I’m running for the state legislature.

I have a record of getting things done, and I would like an opportunity to serve the people of Arizona’s District 23.

If you are registered to vote in Arizona’s District 23, our primary election is July 21st.

I hope to meet you out on the campaign trail!

M-sape,

Naomi Miguel
